The 3rd Spotlight Summer School took place from September 8 to 15 in Bucharest, Romania. It was organised in collaboration with two new partner institutions, NEC and UNATC.
During one week, 11 PhD and MA students from across Europe and beyond explored the complex relationship between architecture and the social production of a place and (in)visible boundaries. Four short films were created and screened for the first time at the UNATC cinema hall on September 14. We are pleased to share them online.
7 sector
What is the price of building a modern capitalist European state after the fall of the communist regime, and who bears this cost? How are memory and architecture connected? Who builds the national identity? The film 7th Sector aims to address these and other inquiries.
Piata Obor
Zooming on Bucharest's oldest and biggest market, this film touches on the recent phenomenon of Romania transforming from a country of outmigration into receiving labour migrants, mainly from Sought Asia. Observing a day in Piata Obor and a Sri Lankan cafeteria located at its very heart, the film explores the concepts of community, home, and a sense of belonging.
Hard Working Hands
The film depicts the daily lives of a small community that gathers near Bucharest's largest market, Obor, to play chess or backgammon. It shows how the time spent playing and sharing their passion for these games helps to maintain strong and lasting social bonds.
Under the hat of Caragiale
Invisible and often unknown to anyone by name, the “co-creators” of culture work hard behind the scenes. The film lifts the curtain to show what their daily work looks like and what place theatre occupies in their lives.
