Spotlight on Opole

The screening of short films produced during Spotlight summer school.

Spotlight was a one-week-long summer school that aimed to capture the dynamics of place attachment and identity in Opole through audiovisuality. After the theoretical and methodological introductory lectures, the twelve students, arriving from ten countries, explored the city with video-cameras in search for its unique essence.

The students worked in groups of three and produced the 6-10 minute short films in four days, with extremely intensive work. Since they arrived from diverse study programs (Visual Art, Multilingualism, Human Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Migration studies, Peace and Conflict studies) for some of them this was the first time when they hold a camera, whereas others had experience with the equipment, but had rather limited background in field work. They had dived into diverse topics, including the importance of music and public art in Opole, place creation and place attachment of migrants, or the microcosmos of a tiny fruit and vegetable store.

The four short films were screened on 17th September from 17 pm in Kino Meduza, in front of a full house. The screening was followed by a friendly conversation, with the active participation of some of the protagonists, local residents, and invited scholars from Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary.

Based on the first feedbacks, the summer school armoured the students with useful knowledge, while the audience enjoyed watching their city, Opole, on the big screen. We plan to continue!

The summer school and the public screening was funded by the International Visegrad Fund and the University of St.Gallen, while the Forthem Alliance played a major role in the promotion of the call.
