Spotlight on Opole: a portrait of the city through the cinema lens

In the frame of Spotlight summer school four short films were produced by international students who arrived from ten countries. They explored Opole between 11-18th September 2022 with video cameras, in search of the city’s unique essence. They had dived into diverse topics, including the importance of music and public art in Opole, place creation and place attachment of migrants and residents, or the microcosmos of a tiny fruit and vegetable store, around which the life of one of the neighbourhoods in the city centre focuses.

Such Things Happen

This short film is about music and its importance in our daily life in a city which is famous for its music festival. It shows the power of music in uniting people and communicating without and beyond words.

Murals

First-time visitors to Opole usually spot its colourful murals. What is the role of public art in Opole, and how is it related to music? The film shows the musical history of Opole through these murals.

Fruits and Vegetables

There is a magical space nestled among the ten-storey building blocks in the centre of Opole: a store sells fruits and vegetables. Nevertheless, it is way more than a family-owned commercial unit: it is a place of encounter.

Second Home

The short film is about belonging to places and creating a home, a second home in Opole. The short film tells the story of three young women from Ukraine and Belarus looking for their belonging and a great dreamer, for whom Opole has become the place of a new beginning.
